Let’s talk about “File Sending” in BlueDevil 1.1, and area that has been highly improved in this version.

We had mainly three complains about the 1.0 version:

  1. The wizard was too complicated with too many pages bko
  2. No way of sending files via Terminal or from other Apps
  3. No way of sending files from Konqueror/Dolphin

I’d like to remark one thing before continuing, the first point of the list was reported in a proper way in the right place, by adding a bug in http://bugs.kde.org , and the process until we get the right solution was “beautiful”, getting feedback from a different user of who reported the bug int he first place. So please! instead of comment blogs, if you want to be sure that you feature is not going to get lost, report it on the bko, we will be glad to help you in any way we can.

So, let’s start by showing the old wizard process:

steps old small BlueDevil 1.1, Three different ways of sending files.

BlueDevil old send files

All that have been reduced to:

steps new BlueDevil 1.1, Three different ways of sending files.

New wizard single step

Quite an improvement, eh? idea inspired by Martin Koller at bko

Then, we had the terminal/application problem, solved by adding 2 new options:

terminal BlueDevil 1.1, Three different ways of sending files.

New terminal options

And finally, we get to one of the most requested features, sending files from konqueror and dolphin !

dolphin bluetooth BlueDevil 1.1, Three different ways of sending files.

Dolphin sending bluetooth files

konqui bluetooth BlueDevil 1.1, Three different ways of sending files.

Konqui sending files!

We hope you like the changes and as always the mandatory video:

  1. Thank you very much for your work on this project! It is great to see that the software is well maintained and frequently improved. Some years ago, it was really like KDE and bluetooth would never work flawless together, however the new version is working fine. So please: Keep up the good work! :)

  2. very nice improvements! awesome work, guys …

one thought about the konqi integration: “bluetooth” is technical jargon. i wonder if we couldn’t merge this with the “copy to”/”move to” menu entries that can be turned on, or if that’s too much then add it to the Actions menu entries? or, as a third alternative, just create a Send To -> menu entry that the libkonq populates similarly to the Actions menu. device and network sending actions could then be aggregated there.

in any case, i’m loving blue devil and how it’s moving forward… :) )

  3. YES! KDE really need to fix more papercuts like that, this little things decide between easier life and pain. Better later than never so keep rockin’!

  4. Hi,
thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for five minutes ago, going to push it to stable asap :)

  5. I agree we have to do something like that, though last time I tried I didn’t see a good way of doing it. Maybe something to improve in platform 4.7

  6. Does bluedevil have any issue tracker for posting bugs and wishes?
Will be good to see in new versions feature to lock/unlock system via bluetooth mac visibility.
Before in kbluetooth this feauture was exists, but I can’t find it in bluedevel.
There are GTK application blueproximity can do this, but I find no kde alternative to it.
Did you plan to add this feature?

  7. Yes, we plan to add it though it is not a priority right now.

http://bugs.kde.org for wish and issue tracking.

  8. @afiestas
I can’t find the bluedevil project in the full list of projects in https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?format=guided# – what the name of the project?
